Mandatory Commercial Recycling (AB 341)

On July 1, 2012, Assembly Bill (AB) 341 went into effect requiring all businesses that generate four or more cubic yards of garbage per week and multi-family dwellings with five or more units to recycle. Businesses include, but are not limited to, office buildings, retail, restaurants, nonprofits, and strip malls. Multi-family dwellings include apartment buildings and attached single-family dwellings such as townhouses, condominiums, and mobile home parks, in which the units do not receive separate or individual solid waste collection service.

Mandatory Commercial Organics Collection (AB 1826)

Approximately 30 million tons of waste is sent to landfills in California each year, of which more than 30% is organic and compostable material. If this material was composted instead of being sent to the landfill, it would decrease greenhouse gasses resulting from the decomposition of organic waste while conserving valuable landfill space.

The mandatory Commercial Organic Waste Recycling Law, Assembly Bill 1826, passed in October 2014 and requires all businesses that generate four (4) or more cubic yards of organic waste per week (food waste, green waste, landscape & pruning waste, non-hazardous wood waste and food-soiled paper) to compost. The goal of this legislation is avoid sending organic materials to landfill, therefore finding the best and highest use for these resources.
