The Scoop: Week of October 16th


Maintenance Activities:

  • Storm preparation throughout the city.
  • Asphalt Repair along Shady Hollow Drive.
  • Install pavers around the Harmony Tree Public Art Project at the Civic Center Plaza.

Major Projects:

  • South Monterey Road Repaving Project: The repaving portion of the work is completed. The remaining work involves the raising of manhole and water valve covers, restriping the roadway and installing new traffic signal loops is underway. This work will be done during daytime hours and may result in some minor impacts to traffic flow on Monterey Road. All work on the project is scheduled to be completed by Thursday, October 26th.   • Downtown Parks Project: There are three new parks being constructed in and around downtown Morgan Hill. Railroad Park is located on Depot Street between 3rd and 4th Streets. Third Street Creek Park is located on West Third Street. Nob Hill Trail Park is located from West Third Street to Dunne Avenue. Please note: The Depot Street Parking Lot and the Third Street Creek Park Parking Lot will be closed during construction.** FULL ROADWAY CLOSURE at the Del Monte Avenue/West Third Street through October 20, 2017 **. Five parking stalls will be unavailable just east of the bridge during this roadway closure. The following work is planned for the week of October 16, 2017:  Railroad Park – Complete the installation of play equipment on site. Begin playground rubber surface installation. Continue the construction of flatwork, fencing, tree planting, and irrigation. Third Street Creek Park –Continue roadway reconstruction of Del Monte Avenue to Nob Hill Terrace. Continue to form curb and gutter for project site. Roadway closed to through traffic during working hours starting 10/3. Roadway tentatively set for paving this week. Nob Hill Trail Park – Continue Decomposed Granite and Resin Paving at Trail. The three parks are scheduled to be completed by November 2017.   • Downtown Parking Garage:  The top level of the downtown parking garage will be closed to allow for the continuation of the improvement project that will prevent and deter unauthorized access to the ledges and roof areas within the parking garage. Since the parking garage opened in March 2016, several challenges have arisen from inappropriate uses/activities occurring in the facility. These include: youth and adults climbing on the ledges, cars speeding within the structure, skateboarding and bicycling at high rates of speed and loitering on the top floor. It is anticipated that the partial closure, affecting approximately 50 spaces, will be in effect through the end of October. We would like to remind the entire community to report any inappropriate uses or activities in the parking garage to the Morgan Hill Police Department at (408) 779-2101. If the circumstances constitute an emergency, call 911 immediately.
  • Old Monterey Road between Llagas Road and Monterey Road: Installation of the new road and signal light at the intersection of Old Monterey Road and Monterey Road has been completed.
  • Boys Ranch and Jackson Well Rehabilitation Project: Project awarded to Conco-West, Inc. for $1.28 million dollars. Project will bring online two previously drilled wells to increase the City’s drinking water capacity. Poured concrete for both well pedestals and began installing well piping.   • San Pedro Avenue Street Improvements: San Pedro Avenue between Monterey Road and Church Street will be closed due to street improvements required of The Commons subdivision located at the northwest corner of Church and San Pedro Avenue.
  • Fourth Street & Monterey Road Signalization Project: Contractor is restoring the bricks in the sidewalk.  The sidewalks may be periodically closed.  Work on the signal poles are on hold.
  • Third Street & Monterey Road.: Contractor to begin start removing curb and gutter, and restoring sidewalk.  The sidewalk will be closed along the east side of Monterey Road between 3rd and 4th Streets.
  • Depot Station: On-going on-site work continues for a new 30-unit residential development with 6,000 square feet of retail space located at 95 E. 3rd Street (northwest corner of Depot & 3rd Streets).
  • New Main Avenue Well Project: This project will construct a new building around the recently drilled well and provide the City with approximately 850 gallons per minute of additional drinking water. The construction contract was awarded on July 26, 2017 to Conco West Construction for $1,603,500. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in October.   • Oak Canyon Booster Station: This project is almost complete. The new station is currently in full operation. We are waiting for PG&E to terminate power to the old station.   • Dewitt Avenue S-Curve Realignment Project: The County of Santa Clara is the lead agency for the DeWitt Avenue S-Curve Realignment safety project between Origilia Lane and Spring Avenue. The City of Morgan Hill is a partner in the project and providing some financial support for the project. The project was awarded to Granite Rock Company. The County has closed DeWitt Avenue in both directions until approximately Thanksgiving. Traffic will be detoured to Monterey Road.   • Hale Avenue Extension/Hale Avenue Plan Line Projects: City Council certified the FEIR and adopted the Hale Extension Plan Line on August 23, 2017.   • Monterey Sewer Trunk Line to Gilroy Project: The project will be combined into one large project to ensure the entire pipeline will function as a single unit. The project will extend the existing sewer trunk line from Harding/Highland intersection, along Monterey Road to Renz Road in Gilroy.   • Highland Avenue Sewer Upgrade Project:Highland Avenue from Harding Avenue to 500 feet west of the Harding intersection, will be temporarily CLOSED 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, from September 25th through November 17th , so that the Contractor can safely complete construction. Detour signage and devices are in place to safely reroute traffic around the closure location. For your safety, please adhere to the construction signage, devices, and personnel at and around the closure location. Next week, MPE will continue installation of the new 30” trunk pipe at the Harding Ave. intersection and continue building the new sewer manhole facilities.
  • Granada Hotel: As part of this project the storm drain on Second Street between Monterey Road and Depot Street will be upgraded. Preparation for the installation of the storm line on Second Street will commence this week. Traffic control will be in place and no parking signs are posted.
  • Barley Place: Onsite work is on hold until PG&E completes removal of overhead
