I was born in 1944 and have lived in Morgan Hill since 1977. I was elected Mayor in 2006 and reelected five times after having served eight years as an elected member of the MH City Council. I served as an appointed member of the Planning Commission prior to my Council election. I am retired from IBM, where I spent 38 years in various marketing and planning roles.
I've been married to Jennifer for over 50 years. Now retired, she has been a Personal Trainer, a downtown business owner and past MHUSD School Board Trustee. She is past president of the MH Historical Society and also chaired the Centennial Committee in charge of the 2006 centennial celebration of Morgan Hill. She currently dedicates much of her time as a Board Member of Community Solutions and as President of the Homeowners Association at Pajaro Dunes. She was MH “Woman of the Year” for 2006.
We have two children. Our daughter Stacy is married to IT specialist Keith Huddleston and teaches 7th/ 8th grade at St. Mary school in Gilroy, where she was Gilroy’s “Educator of the Year” in 2005. They have two kids, Jared and Kylie. Jared plays football for the College of San Mateo, Kylie plays softball for Christopher High School and the Cal Nuggets traveling team. Our son Greg is also married to a Jennifer Tate, he works in the business software arena,
she works for the Gap and they live in San Francisco's Haight district and have another home in Bennett Valley near Santa Rosa.
I was an avid runner, completing about 15 marathons plus a 50-mile run to celebrate turning 50 back in 1994. Asthma has slowed me now, but I still enjoy biking and walking. I love all sports, especially Giants baseball and Cal football. Jennifer and I spend the month of March in Scottsdale, AZ where we attend Giants spring training games. I enjoy reading, primarily fiction, and enjoy time at the beach. We love to spend weekends at our Pajaro Dunes condo, especially in the milder winter months.
I'm a member and past-president of the MH Rotary Club. I support youth leadership activities in Rotary, and I mentor Interact Clubs at both Central and Oakwood High Schools. I'm a member of the MH Chamber, which I support through the Ambassador program and by giving regular City updates at Chamber Board meetings. I am a past president of the Leadership Morgan Hill Board of Directors; Leadership is a great program for emerging community leaders.
I serve on the Board of Directors of the Housing Trust of Santa Clara County, a great organization that is making a difference on housing affordability in our region. I also serve on the Boys and Girls Club of Silicon Valley Board.
Serving as Mayor is demanding yet very rewarding. In addition to our regular Council meetings and frequent additional workshops and constituent meetings, I also serve on the City/School District Liaison Committee, the County Library Joint Powers Authority (JPA) Board and as past president of the Cities Association of Santa Clara County Board. I am past president of the Peninsula Division of the League of California Cities. Finally, I work with our Youth Action Council and our Library, Culture and Arts Commission in a Council liaison role.
I love Morgan Hill, and enjoy working to make it the best community possible.
