I'm Steve Tate, age 67. I've lived in Morgan Hill since 1977. I was elected Mayor in 2006 and reelected in both 2008 and 2010 after having served eight years as an elected member of the MH City Council. I also served as an appointed member of the Planning Commission prior to my Council election. I am retired from IBM, where I spent 38 years in various marketing and planning roles.
I've been married to Jennifer for almost 45 years. Now retired, she has been a Personal Trainer, a downtown business owner and past MHUSD School Board Trustee. She is past president of the MH Historical Society and also chaired the Centennial Committee in charge of the 2006 centennial celebration of Morgan Hill. She was selected as MH “Woman of the Year” for 2006.
We have two children. Our daughter Stacy is married to IT specialist Keith Huddleston and teaches 8th grade at St. Mary school in Gilroy, where she was Gilroy’s “Educator of the Year” in 2005. They have two kids, 13-year old Jared and 10-year old Kylie. Our son Greg is also married to a Jennifer Tate, he works in the business software arena, she works for the Gap and they live in San Francisco's Marina district.
I'm an avid runner, and have completed about 15 marathons plus a 50 mile run to celebrate turning 50 back in 1994. I love all sports, especially Giants baseball. Jennifer and I spend the month of March in Scottsdale, AZ where we attend Giants spring training games. We also get to a few games at AT&T Park. I enjoy reading, primarily fiction, and also enjoy time at the beach. We love to spend weekends at our Pajaro Dunes condo, especially in the milder winter months.
I'm a member and past-president of the MH Rotary Club. I am a strong supporter of youth leadership activities in Rotary, and I mentor Interact Clubs at both Central and Oakwood High Schools. I'm a member of the MH Chamber, which I support through the Ambassador program and as an ex-officio member of the Board. I am a past president of the Leadership Morgan Hill Board of Directors; Leadership is a great program for emerging community leaders. I serve on the Board of Directors of the Housing Trust of Santa Clara County, a prestigious organization that is really making a difference on housing affordability in our region. I also serve on the United Way Silicon Valley Board.
Serving as Mayor is both rewarding and demanding. In addition to our regular Council meetings and frequent additional workshops and constituent meetings, I also serve on the City/School District Liaison Committee, the South County Regional Fire Study Advisory Committee, the County Library Joint Powers Authority (JPA) Board and as Secretary/Treasurer of the Cities Association of Santa Clara County Board. I am incoming President of the Peninsula Division of the League of California Cities. Finally, I work closely with our Youth Advisory Committee and our Library, Culture and Arts Commission in a Council liaison role.
I love Morgan Hill, and enjoy working to make it the best community possible.
