Residential garbage service in Morgan Hill includes collection of garbage, recyclables, and compostable waste. Garbage and compostable wastes are collected weekly and other recyclables are collected biweekly.
The recycling program accepts cardboard, mixed paper, plastics coded 1 through 7 (no #6 Styrofoam or aseptic containers), glass and metal in the brown recycling container. Yard waste, food waste and food soiled paper go in the green organics cart. Also accepted are used motor oil, oil filters, and household batteries.
It is illegal to dump televisions, computer monitors, and other electronic waste in landfills. Each one can contain up to 7 pounds of lead, which is a hazardous material. Locally, Morgan Hill Recycling, (669) 258-5470 and DG Global Inc., (408) 320-1560, will accept all electronic waste. Please be aware that there may be a charge to dispose of certain consumer electronics due to disposal costs.
It is illegal to dispose of fluorescent lighting in landfills. Fluorescent tubes and bulbs contain mercury vapor which is released into the environment when they break. Locally, Johnson's Lumber, (408) 778-1550, will accept fluorescent lighting at no charge or call the Santa Clara County Household Hazardous Waste Hotline at (408) 299-7300 to register for one of their monthly local Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Events.
