The Special Operations Division is under the leadership of the Special Operations Commander. The primary responsibility of this division is to provide specialized, non-patrol services to the community. These services include; internal affairs investigations, the investigation of major crimes and missing persons, crime prevention, gang enforcement and education, and the coordination of special events such as Mushroom Mardi Gras and the Fourth of July Festival.
Day to day oversight of the division is provided by a sergeant who supervises three detectives, a street crimes investigator, two school resource officers, a police corporal assigned to the regional Narcotics Task Force, and one community service officer. Officers in this division work cooperatively with the Office of the District Attorney, the Unified Narcotic Enforcement team and the Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement Task Force in both Santa Clara and San Benito Counties.
The Special Operations Division also houses the department’s SWAT and Hostage Negotiations Unit.
