The Support Services Division provides vital service to both police officers and the public. The division consists of the Records Unit, Communications Center, Information Technology and Property/Evidence Services.
Staff in the Records Unit process thousands of cases generated by officers per year. These cases are submitted to the Office of the District attorney for review and filing of criminal charges. Records Unit staff also greet community members at the counter and assist them with day to day paperwork processing requests such as release of impounded vehicles and citation sign offs.
The Communications Center is staffed with Public Safety Dispatchers that work around the clock to answer 911 calls. Communications staff in the center also dispatch police officers and Public Works Personnel during non- business hours. Fire and paramedic requests are transferred directly to the Santa Clara County fire Department, with whom the City contracts for those services. Public Safety Dispatchers answer an average of nine thousand 9-1-1 calls and seventy- four thousand other emergency and business lines per year, in addition to documenting minor incident reports via phone. Selected staff members from this division also participate in the department's SWAT/HNT Unit as Tactical Dispatchers and Hostage Negotiators.
The remainder of the Support Services Division is made up of specialized personnel such as the Property and Evidence Technician and Police Service Cadets.
