City Elections and Registering to Vote

City Elections
The City of Morgan Hill uses the services of the County of Santa Clara Registrar of Voters' Office to consolidate local elections. This results in a significant cost savings to the citizens of Morgan Hill. Regular elections are held in the City of Morgan Hill on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of even-numbered years. Special elections may be called by the City Council and are held on dates as set forth in the California Elections Code.

In Morgan Hill, the Mayor is directly elected to serve a two-year term. Council members are elected to serve four-year terms. The City Clerk and the City Treasurer are elected to serve four-year terms.

The City's Election Official is the Council Services and Records Manager. Information relating to City elections, campaign disclosure, and economic interest are available in the City Clerk's Office located at City Hall at 17555 Peak Avenue, phone (408) 779-7259.

How to Register to Vote

You must re-register to vote whenever you move. In order to be eligible to vote, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You must be a citizen of the United States.
  • You must be a resident of California.
  • You must be 18 years of age, or older, as of the day of the next election vote.
  • You must NOT be in prison or on parole for a felony conviction.
  • You must be registered 15 days prior to the election in which you wish to vote. You will be sent a Voter Notification Card to confirm your registration. If you do NOT receive a Voter Notification Card, call the County Clerk/Registrar of Voters at (408) 299-8302.
  • You must be a citizen of Morgan Hill to vote in local elections.

Voter registration forms can be downloaded from the Registrar of Voters Web site. You may also pick up a voter registration form at the City Clerk's Office at City Hall (directions to City Hall) or the Registrar of Voters' office located at 1555 Berger Drive, Building 2, San Jose, CA.

Absentee Ballots

If you wish to receive an absentee ballot by mail, a written application must be on file with the County Clerk/Registrar of Voters' office at least seven days before the election. After the seven-day deadline, you may apply for and vote an absentee ballot at the office either in person or through an authorized representative.

For more information, visit the Registrar of Voters Web site at www.sccvote.org.
